Sandra Atlas Bass Center for Liver Diseases
Liver disease affects more than 60 million Americans and it is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. To address this significant public health issue, the Department of Medicine at North Shore-LIJ has established a new Center for Liver Diseases to facilitate the clinical care, research and educational push to combat this devastating illness. The highest quality of care, comfort and compassion for patients has always been a hallmark of the services provided to patients with liver disease at North Shore-LIJ. This new highly visible and utilized space will enhance our ability to provide the very best care for patients and their families suffering from this devastating illness in the most aesthetically pleasing environment possible.

Medical Ethics Division of Medicine
The Division of Medical Ethics was created in 2011 in the Department of Medicine to build upon the health system’s successful track record and commitment to incorporate bioethics into clinical practice and physician education. The Division Chief is Dr. Samuel Packer who also is Chair of the Ethics Committees at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center. The Ethics Consult Service functions as an arm of the Ethics Committee and is led by Renee McLeod-Sordjan, and the Medical Ethics Attending staff: Frederick Smith, Lourdes Bahamonde, Mitchell Adler and William Doscher. In addition we have an Ethics Fellowship program and significant responsibilities for Professionalism education at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ Health System School of Medicine. Our focus is Clinical Medical Ethics and education.
