Stroke Survivor’s Generous Donation Renovates Unit

Mr. Barron, a stroke survivor and former patient of the hospital said, “Due to my wife’s quick action in recognizing the warning signs, she rushed me to the hospital where a dedicated team took fast action to deal with my stroke. I am a survivor with no after effects. We are thankful for the care that I received and wish to give back to the hospital so that they may continue to help others in need.”

The 2,200 square-foot stroke unit, located on the fourth floor of the hospital’s Cohen Pavilion, was modernized and redesigned with an inpatient video monitoring service so patients can be remotely evaluated by the hospital’s stroke neurologists, 24 hours a day, in real-time. In addition, the unit’s capacity has expanded from six to eight inpatient beds in order to accommodate the growing need for services of acute stroke patients. Each inpatient room is larger in size and includes enhanced lighting and high-end aesthetic finishes. The advanced design affords closer contact between the stroke team and patient resulting in improved care.

“We are always looking to further enhance stroke care for our patients and the Barron’s generous donation allows us to do that,” said Paul Wright, MD, chair, neurology at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. “North Shore University Hospital’s Comprehensive Stroke Center has distinguished itself from other hospitals in the region by developing a new patient ‘pathway’ which combines the latest diagnostic techniques with state-of-the-art clinical advances from a variety of disciplines. Every patient with an acute stroke receives a rapid evaluation by a multidisciplinary team that provides access to state-of-the-art technology such as transcranial doppler, echocardiography, computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), as well as early contact with rehabilitation services.” He said that the new pathway allows stroke patients to receive focused treatment and dramatically reduces the average length-of-stay time in the hospital. The Manuel H. and Claire Barron Stroke Unit is a critical component of North Shore University Hospital’s Comprehensive Stroke Center -- the first hospital on Long Island and one of only four in New York State to receive advanced certification. The hospital also earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval, as well as the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark, Get with the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement award and Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite status, in recognition of its ability to receive and treat the most complex stroke cases.

North Shore University Hospital’s inpatient stroke unit cares for patients who arrive at the hospital with symptoms of acute cerebrovascular attacks. Last year, 837 patients were treated. The unit offers patients the most advanced interventions designed to minimize brain damage after a stroke. Fully monitored and staffed by a dedicated team of nurses and physicians with specialized training in the care of stroke patients, the unit provides a centralized suite for stroke care allowing a more focused and integrated treatment model.
